How Runway Recycled’s Vision for Change Came to Life

Black Fashion Week began as an ambitious dream: To create a platform for sustainable fashion while celebrating excellence, creativity, and diversity. From the initial brainstorming sessions to the inaugural event in Moorestown, NJ, this journey was filled with inspiring moments and valuable lessons.

In this blog, I take you behind the scenes of Black Fashion Week, exploring how we brought together talented designers, sustainable brands, and artistic talent to spotlight eco-conscious fashion. I also reflect on the challenges we faced, the partnerships we built, and the profound impact of showcasing local talent outside traditional fashion hubs like New York.

Event Overview: 

    • Dates: July 24-27, 2024
    • Location: Moorestown Mall, New Jersey
  • Participants:
    • Designers: Two New Jersey-based and one Pennsylvania-based  
    • Brands/Retailers: Six from Moorestown Mall
    • Models and Support Staff: Represented the Northeast corridor including the DC metropolitan area, Delaware-Pennsylvania metropolitan area, and New York
    • Collaborations: Rizzieri Aveda School in Voorhees, NJ, for hair and makeup; local artist and musicians; Moorestown Mall retailers for catering and participants discounts
    • Events Highlights:
  • Day 1: “Runway Ready”
        • Designers and models met for networking, final fittings, and rehearsals
        • This preparatory day set the stage for the upcoming shows, ensuring seamless presentations.
  • Day 2: Eco-Chic Trunk Show
        • Featuring collections from The Closet, Runway Recycled, MeStyleNiche, and Artwear by Janis Leign
        • Each brand showcased unique, eco-conscious designs, emphasizing sustainable fashion. 
  • Day 3: Eco-Chic Trunk Show
      • Highlighted Jypsea Leathergoods, Runway Recycled, MeStyleNiche, and Artwear by Janis Leigh.
      • The focus remained on sustainability, with each brand presenting distinct collections. 
    • Day 4: “Elegance In Motion” Grand Finale
      • Featuring Simply Lisa’s Favorite Things, New Dimension by Jeri, Doctor Scrubs, Sustainable Gowns, The Clost, Jypsea Leathergoods, Runway Recycled, MeStyleNiche, and Artwear by Janis Leigh. 
      • Hosted by Kiona Golden with performances by DJ Dunn, singer Julian King, and flutist Jade Fletcher. 
      • Sculptor Gerald Thomas contributed to the artistic ambiance in Runway Recycled. 

 

Collaboration and Community Engagement:

  • Hair and Makeup:

Rizzier Aveda School provided services, offering students hands-on experience in a professional setting.

  • Artistic Contributions:

Local sculptor and musicians enhanced the sensory experience for attendees. 

  • Catering: Local retailers supplied meals for models and sweet treats for participants, supporting community businesses. 
  • Retailer Support: 10 Moorestown Mall retailers offered discounts to Black Fashion Week participants, fostering a supportive community environment.

Black Fashion Week 2024 was a testament to the power of collaboration and the growing movement towards sustainable fashion. By bringing together diverse talents and community resources, the event not only showcased innovative designs but also highlighted the importance of eco-conscious practices in the fashion industry.
